Furore, Amalfi Coast

The view from the boat is breathtaking, the more adventurous will be able to swim to the beach

Along the beautiful Amalfi coast, UNESCO heritage site since 1997, enclosed between the coast overlooking the sea and the edge of the Agerola plateau, there is Furore, a widespread village that does not have a defined centre or a main square. Whose houses, clinging to the rock, are scattered along winding streets among olive trees, vineyards and Mediterranean scrub.

The name Furore dates back to the Romans, Terra Furoris (Land of Fury) then simplified to Furore. And it comes from the irrepressible fury with which the waves of the sea crash into the rocks on stormy days. Book with us a boat tour to Procida on one of our yacht.

Furore

The Fjord

The most characteristic and well-known place is the Furore Fjord, a suggestive inlet created by the flow of the Schiato stream which over the millennia has eroded the limestone rock. Through a staircase set in the rocky wall it is possible to access the fjord and reach the picturesque fishing village and the enchanting beach, the only one in Furore. Inside, there are also the old paper mill, the small church in the rock and the mill that now houses the Eco-museum of the Fjord, a small museum with an adjoining small botanical garden and a herb garden.

The Bridge

Higher up, 30 meters above sea level, the two stony walls of the fjord are joined by a bridge that allows all the towns of the Amalfi coast to be connected by a single road that winds like a ribbon above the sea. The bridge decorates the fjord below in a natural way, enclosing it in an architectural frame perfectly inserted into the landscape. The beauty of this area is unique.

This place has been the evocative springboard of a summer international diving competition (MarMeeting) for years, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world. Admiring the Furore Fjord from the sea is a unique experience. Aboard our yachts, modern and elegant, with all accessories and comforts, you’ll be able to enjoy an unforgettable cruise.

The History

Furore was supposedly founded by the Romans. Thanks to its geographic conformation, which made it easily defensible from attacks by the barbarians and then the Saracens, the village was able to develop and give life to a thriving economy based on craftmanship, sheep farming, trade and seafaring activities. The fjord was an excellent natural harbour. The Schiato stream, which created the fjord, was also the driving force of the ancient industries that developed here (paper mills, mills…).

Furore was part of the Marine Republic of Amalfi and in late Middle Ages became an independent municipality.
Over the centuries there were many wealthy Neapolitan families who chose Furore as a place of residence and leisure and who today are remembered in the names of the streets.

The fjord in 1948 was also the evocative set of “Miracolo”, an episode of the film “L’Amore” directed by Roberto Rossellini with Anna Magnani who bought a house in the seaside village, ironically naming it “Villa della Storta”. Today it is part of the Eco-museum of the Fjord.

Points of historical-cultural interest

In addition to the rocky church of Santa Caterina di Alessandria, in the fjord village, in Furore you can admire:

  • the Church of San Giacomo, built on a rock chapel dating back to the eleventh century and which houses valuable frescoes inside
  • the Church of Sant’Elia, dating back to the 13th century, with a wooden triptych from 1479
  • the Church of San Michele Arcangelo with three naves and a particular asymmetrical entrance.

For hikes lovers, do not miss the natural paths that cross the Furore landscape. For the bravest, do not miss the zip line that connects the two sides of the gorge at about 400 meters above sea level.
